FAQ

What are your in-person meetings like?

These days our in-person meetings are informal. We talk about our writing, grab a bite to eat, and write. Many of us are busy with families and jobs, so this is our dedicated weekly creative time. During most write-ins, with the exception of Writing with Littles, we reach a collective quiet where everyone hits the keyboards at once.

What are your online meetings like?

In 2025 we made our online meetings more diverse, with definite agendas for group critiques and reading practice, as well as time to chat. But it’s fine if someone wants to just show up and listen in — reading, critiquing, and having one’s work critiqued, are optional.

We ask that folks sign up in advance to read or have their work critiqued. Documents to be critiqued are then sent out 3-5 days in advance. Sign-ups in advance are not required for those who are not reading or submitting a piece. We usually start the call with a casual chat until the meeting leader facilitates the beginning of the critique or reading.

During the online meetings that have no scheduled reading or critique, we have casual chats. These meetings are also facilitated by a leader and usually begin with a writing-related question. However, they require no preparation, are much more flexible, social, and a great way to get to know your fellow writers.

Does your group write nonfiction?

As of early 2025, most of our members are working on fiction projects. We do, however, have a few members who regularly work on creative nonfiction, Christian devotionals, and genealogical research. All genres are welcome.

How many people are in the group?

As of February 2025, we have over one hundred members on our Discord server. However, of those a few dozen are active. Our in-person write-ins tend to have five to ten members in attendance. The online meetings are usually attended by a handful of members. Some folks attend the in-person and online gatherings every week, while others attend as their schedules allow. It does tend to be an intimate group, which is great for discussion, but we are very welcoming of newcomers. We enjoy meeting new people and find special joy in supporting writers.

If I want to join, what are the expectations?

At the most basic level, the expectation is to treat others with respect. Beyond that, we have no requirements for attendance, membership fees, or sharing your writing. However, we do enjoy active members who contribute to our vibrant discussions, share their challenges and wins, or just hang out with us while we write.

Is this group more in person or on Discord?

We strive for balance. Most of our active members participate both in person and on Discord, but we do have some members who prefer not to join the Discord server and some members who are unable to meet in person. Participating in both is the best way to get the most out of the group, but we don’t judge those who join only one or the other.

What is Discord?

Discord is a free online platform for chat and video meetings. Learn more.
